The Dangers of Losing Sleep

A recent article in the Huffington Post illustrates the devastating effects long and short term sleep loss can have on your body and mind. The article sites research from multiple sources, including the SLEEP journal, Carnegie Mellon University, University of California Berkley, and Harvard Medical School.

After one night of sleep deprivation, research shows you are:
• less focused and having memory problems
• more likely to have an accident
• losing brain tissue
• hungrier and likely to eat more

After long-term sleep deprivation, research shows your:
• risk of obesity and diabetes goes up
• stroke risk quadruples
• risk of heart disease and some cancers increases
• risk of death significantly increases

This information is scary considering the fact that many Americans do not get enough quality sleep. Please make sure to talk to your physician if you feel you are having sleep problems.
