Boise Dental Crowns
A crown, or "cap," is a restoration that covers the entire tooth to restore it to its original shape and form. Crowns are needed when a tooth does not have enough tooth structure to support a filling. This can happen due to fracture, decay, wear or other factors. Crowns can be made of different materials. Gold crowns are strong and very biocompatible. Gold crowns with porcelain over the top of them are more esthetic and resemble natural teeth. All porcelain crowns can be made to duplicate the shades and translucencies in natural teeth to make them very lifelike.
New porcelain crowns are made of materials that are both strong, esthetic and bio-compatible. Lithium disilicate, or e.max, is a solid porcelain material that is being used for a variety of situations. In addition, zirconia crowns are also being used for esthetic restorations in areas where maximum strength is needed.
How do I take care of my crown?
A dental crown should be taken care of like a natural tooth. Avoid overly hard foods (such as chewing ice), avoid using your teeth as a tool, and protect your teeth if you grind at night. Crowns can still get decay under them, so it is important to brush and floss thoroughly. With proper care a crown can last for many years.
